Lord Of The Rings Diet: Are you Galadriel or Frodo?
I'm a total LOTR fanatic. Like since I was a kid. (That's Lord Of The Rings for you non-dorks).I've learned a lot from these beautiful tales over the years, but here are the most important points:
- All who wander are not lost
- Always take a loyal friend with you on long trips into unknown territory
- Sometimes you have to eat like a Hobbit, sometimes an Elf
I'll tell you more about that last one in a minute, but first some basic fundamentals on where I'm coming from:Most people are a bit frustrated when it comes to their body, how they want to feel, and food. That may mean an end to the headaches, exhaustion, feeling uncomfortable in your body and dropping some pounds, but there is so much conflicting advice on how to get from point A to B:
- Eat less, eat more often
- Eat more per meal, eat three meals a day
- Weigh your food to the gram, weigh yourself daily
- Never weigh yourself
- Intermittent fasting
- Fast once a week
- Never fast, it will hurt your adrenals
- Give yourself a cheat day once a week
- NEVER cheat!
Are you insane yet? Feeling totally fed up by the diet gurus and health experts, many throw up their hands in despairand throw down at the buffet to seek a bit of comfort because it's all just so exasperating. And all of this is because we don't know how to listen to the one expert who can shine the light on the best path and diet of us. Have you totally lost your ability to listen to your own body? Join the fucking club. Sorry for the harsh language, but I've just about had it with the food ultimatums, and I'm pissed that there are so many exhausted and downhearted people out there who are frustrated with their bodies and diets. I'm not saying that diets and experts (myself included) don't have amazing information about eating and nutrition to share. You should learn, read and try. That's how we all get started and master anything - we learn from someone more learned than ourselves and try and practice. But it's rarely one answer for everyone. And one thing that most diets don't say is that you will change and your body will change as you age. And there are three things you really, REALLY need to do to find your perfect, evolving diet as you age:
- Experiment
- Feel
- Adjust
See, sometimes you might have to eat like Galadriel and sometimes you need to eat like Frodo.
If you don't know LOTR, here's the Cliff's Notes on what I'm talking about: Galadriel is a beautiful Elf queen who seems to live off magical crackers called Lembas bread (probably like flax crackers), water and leaves. She's kind of a mystical, glowing, yogi-vegan who happens to hold one of the rings of power.(BTW, did you know that you can get your very own One True Ring in the SkyMall catalogue!? If only Sauron had known that, he could have saved a lot of trouble looking for Frodo, but I digress...) Then there are the Hobbits like Bilbo and Frodo who drink beer, eat EVERYTHING and eat all day long. I've realized that sometimes I eat like Galadriel the Elf, and sometimes I eat like Frodo the Hobbit. On Galadriel days I love my green juice, eat greens at every meal, avoid animal products and stay off the gluten, dairy, sugar and caffeine. Then there are my Frodo days: Breakfast: eggs and sprouted toast with Earth Balance, earl grey with coconut creamer or soy milk2nd breakfast: green protein smoothieElevenzies: tea and fruitLunch: Extreme, Man-sized salad with smoked salmon and marinated beansDinner: steamed veggies, brown rice, and baked tempeh, more fish or grass fed beefSupper: more fruit and tea These days are usually in the middle of a week of daily 3 mile bike rides to and from my son's school, 20+ sets of stairs for a few subway trips, and walking another 1-2 miles between meetings in the city. My energy keeps up with me and my weight doesn't fluctuate much. And you can learn listen to your body, adjust what you eat when you need to, and not beat yourself up when your diet needs to change to suit your needs. So, dear reader, I'm curious: Can you have a little fun and flexibility in your diet?Or is the idea of "fun" and "flexible" with your diet scary - like you might lose control?Do you trust your body and listen to what it's telling you?Or is it like listening to a foreign language and you're not sure if she's asking for cupcakes or protein?I'm curious...share your thoughts!Learn more How to 5 Ways to Master Your Inner Bitch Brain!!Click and Check this out Positive Psychology Certification program!!xo,Alex
